Boogers! Thu, 19 Nov 2015 16:16:12 +0000 There are lots of baby gear and accessories out there, and while some of them are essential, some of them will definitely make life easier for you and your baby!Nasal Aspirator

A small case of the sniffles can become gigantic headache when your baby’s sleep schedule is disrupted. Constant wiping can lead to a red sore nose. If your baby has a cold and a stuffy nose, a nasal aspirator will help clear your baby’s sinuses. It is a medication-free way to help your baby get over colds more comfortably right up until they can blow their own noses… which could be awhile!

The BabyComfyNose Nasal Aspirator . It is easy to clean and does not require you to buy additional filters. Reusable, gentle on your baby’s stuffy nose and most of all, it works great!

A Closer Look at Microfiber Mon, 02 Nov 2015 15:46:29 +0000 So I had a customer who was disappointed in her microfiber inserts- they just were not absorbing anymore resulting in leaks. Google this issue and you will find a lot of hate for microfiber out there. “It’s hard to wash, it’s smelly, it loses absorbency…” etc

Chances are, you have some microfibre in your stash, some of the most awesome pockets –Sweet Pea One Size Pocket, bumGenius 4.0– and All-In-Ones like the bumGenius Freetimes and the Sweet Pea Newborn AIOs!) come with microfiber. There are some pros- microfibre is affordable, trim , fast absorbing and dries quickly after washing.

closer-look-microWith the right care, microfibre can serve you well for years. Like most issues, if you nail your washing routine, cloth diapering is easy peasy. Keep in mind that microfibre is synthetic and is the stuff that a lot of mops and dusters are made of. That means it is absorbent and attracts particles and lint. So here are some tips:

  • Wash with detergent! Sometimes we skimp to much on the detergent
  • Be cautious with rash creams, even cloth diaper safe ones. If you must, use a disposable liner
  • Hang dry to avoid lint accumulation in the dryer

That’s it, my friends! If you happen to have lifeless microfibre in your stash, especially fleece topped ones, it is possible to resurrect them. Give it a good wash and strip. I recommend the Laundry Tarts Strip It!, and be prepared to have to do multiple applications. You just need to get all the residues and particles out of there… and avoid using the dryer.

Also, if you are new to the cloth, it is worth noting that microfiber is the only fibre that should not be in direct contact with your baby’s skin. Microfibre inserts are often designed to go in a pocket, like the bumGenius one size insert. Or they have a fleece side like the AppleCheeks stay dry microterry Insert, the fleece side being the stay dry side that is in direct contact with the skin.

Why I cloth diapered my baby Mon, 19 Oct 2015 14:51:15 +0000 There are obvious and practical reasons to cloth diaper- they are eco-friendly, they save you money, they are leak proof and can hold the worst of the blowouts. But what about how your baby feels?

We obsess about convenience and many practical matters when preparing for a baby, and don’t get me wrong…. that is important! Mommy and Daddy sanity make a happy home!

Babies are wonderful and it’s wonderful having this person in your life, for whom everything is new! I was delighted to witness my daughter’s first… everything! Every sensation is something new and potentially amazing. But that goes for the bad stuff too and it’s made so frustrating because of our baby’s inability to communicate what’s bothering them.

Teething, over tiredness, growth spurting, hungry… but do I really know why she’s fussing? All we can do in our prepetual state of worry, is do our best to make our little ones as comfortable as we can.

I think to myself, “Do I choose to wear plastic / paper, disposable underwear everyday? It’s pretty sensitive down there, would I want a chemically treated underwear that turns my pee into gel, and then sit in it?” So I put my put my baby in the closest thing to a pair of underwear AND change her when when she needs changing.

Cloth diapering is a simple, practical and comfortable solution to pooh and pee management.

Bunny Ears Mon, 31 Aug 2015 14:44:24 +0000 You may have come across the term “bunny ears” or “rabbit ears” in your cloth diaper research. This is just a little diapering technique to get a snug fit around the legs. If there are gaps in your diaper around the legs, you may get a leak. You can close the gap by pulling on the sides of the front of the diaper upwards and towards the back- after you have snapped or velcroed the diaper closed. The diaper tabs will stick out at the top, resembling rabbit ears.

This is an especially helpful tip for newborn babies that don’t have chubby legs… yet!
